Books Are Nice But Do They Have a Purpose?

Are you using the advice it’s giving you?

There are book lovers all over the world and you’re probably one of them. There are different genres of books to choose from but the two genres that seem to give people the most advice are self-help and business.

These two are personally my favorite genres to read on a daily basis and if you’ve ever read these books then you know the power that is within them. The problem that a lot of readers have when it comes to these books is having the mindset of instant results from reading the book.

They think that the act of reading the book will automatically make them into a better person afterward. Books are great and reading is a good skill to have but what happens when you don’t apply the advice that these books are giving you?

Most of these books literally lay out a plan for you to take and give you steps to take in real life. Yet, the most we do is highlight these steps and move on with our lives. You need to keep these steps in mind when walking around in your life.

Some of the advice that’s provided is very simple and can be done while reading the book. I’ve been guilty of this too, although I enjoy reading books for tips and tricks I had to realize that these things wouldn’t work if I wasn’t applying them to my life.

Once you get into the mindset of actually trying things from the book you’re reading, then you will start to see results and actually learn from the book. What also happens when you don’t take advice from a book is you tend to forget everything from that book.

Someone may ask you what you think about a book but you won’t be able to answer truthfully because you didn’t take the book seriously. It was an enjoyable read but how did the book help you in your life?

That’s what people want to hear about when they ask you how a book was. Try this out with someone you know who is an avid book reader. Depending on the answer they give you, you will know if they truly digested the book or not. Start taking the books you read seriously, the authors published that advice for a reason!

Books Are Enjoyable

Now, you don’t want to overwhelm yourself when it comes to reading but your intentions need to be there when you do. Authors have the gift of writing to a market that will respect their opinion so they try to make the text as fluid as possible.

If you ever thought about writing a book or starting a blog then you may want to take that into consideration as well. Yes, enjoy your books as much as you can and really make time for reading them.

Although there should be a meaning behind what you’re reading you also want to be to sit back and relax. If you’re an avid reader then you know how much reading can be an escape from reality.

You’re able to focus on what the author is saying and you don’t have to worry about anything that’s going on in your actual life. Depending on how rough your life is going, you may want to start taking action right when you’re done reading.

If you’re reading a sentence that’s giving you some type of advice that sounds good to you, stop reading and come up with a plan to use that advice. Or, if you feel like you need to try it immediately, then do it.

Books about social skills and mental health do a really good job of giving advice that you can use on the spot. Some of these authors know the uncomfortable advice they’re giving you but they made the book for readers like you.

Other than profit, their goal for writing the books is to help people like you who are reading the book. Think about it like this, if you were writing a book, how would you want your audience to feel when reading?

You probably want them to be relaxed and motivated at the same time right? Act like the author is talking to you when reading, for that moment they’re your life coach and they’re giving you the advice you need to be successful so take advantage of it.

Forgetting to Apply The Advice

How often do you read a book and forget about it weeks later? This happens to me often but I’m trying to make a conscious effort to go back to those books and apply some of the techniques they offered.

Yes, you may be a fast reader and you may have read a lot of books in your life but how many of those books have truly helped you to become a better version of yourself and helped you to level up?

Often, you may find a book and think that you’ve found the key to all of your problems. Every reader has had that feeling and they now have the book sitting in a box in their closet collecting dust.

You have to go through trial and error when it comes to books but you need to give them a chance. Giving them a chance as in actually applying the advice they give you and not just reading just to read.

You want to be able to finish a book and feel like you’ve really expanded your knowledge and feel like you’re a step closer to your goals. Be pickier the next time you go book shopping, see what book is going to help you in your area of concern the most.

Look at the reviews of the books in try to find comments that talk about the book changing their lives. These are the books you want to invest in, it’s always an awkward feeling when you can’t remember what a book was about.

It may have been a long time since you read it but what was it actually about? Look at the books you have on your bookcase or you have piled up now. See which books you can give a one-sentence synopsis on.

The books that you can do this for are the books you’ve most likely learned from, the books that you can’t do this for you may want to reread and take detailed notes to apply into your life.

You’re not the only one who forgets about what they read, almost every reader has done it before in their life and it’s time for you to make this change in your reading style. Think about how much better your reading time will be when you’re looking for things that will actually help you in the real world.

It’s Up to You to Take Action

The books you read are not going to come alive and tell you to do something about your situation, you have to it on your own. This can be hard to do at first but you have to build the courage on your own to take action.

Many people get nervous to try something new because they don’t what steps to take. Books do you the favor of taking the steps already, they even give you a whole plan to implement.

All you have to do is get up and try it, so what if it doesn't go well? At least you tried and you know how to approach a situation better, this may happen to a business you want to start.

There are plenty of books out there that teach you how to start your own business, you may have complications along the way but at least you did what a lot of people aren’t willing to do. There are situations where the advice books give you will work too or you will end up seeing what the author meant in the long run.

How have books impacted your life? Have they actually helped you in life or were they just a “good read?” I’ll leave you with a quote from Mahatma Gandhi that says

“The future depends on what you do today.”

A young adult who’s writing is geared towards self-improvement and self care. “We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospect.”
