Building Your Personal Brand

How do you represent yourself when out and about?

We all have a personal brand whether we know it or not. This brand is how people view us, when they hear your name, what do they think? You’ve probably heard from others that you shouldn’t care about what people think about you and to a certain extent that is totally true.

You can’t let others' negative thoughts about you affect you too much but you also have to be proud of what you’re displaying to them. How do you want to be viewed, honestly?

Your personal brand matters, it’s what separates you from others and it’s part of your social value. If you don’t like how you view yourself then how do you expect others to view you?

They’re going to treat you the same way you treat yourself, this is where self-improvement comes into play and you have to make a choice. Either you can stay the same way you’re now, which isn’t totally bad but you're not allowing yourself to grow.

Or you can develop into the best version of yourself and you can present yourself with more confidence to others. Let’s be honest, we’ve all had our times in life where we just didn't care.

We may walk out of the house dressed in clothes that weren’t ironed or smelled good. Sometimes, there’s an emergency and you just have to go but if you have the time, why not put on some nice clean clothes and have a good mindset about the day that's to come.

Also, if you don't want to socialize, you won't be worried too much about what that person thinks of you because you know took pride in your appearance when stepping out of the house therefore you walk and talk with more confidence. Don’t let your personal brand die out, keep it alive and keep it growing.

The Process

So, what should you focus on first when building your personal brand? As I am in the process of learning as well, I do find it hard to choose but there’s no doubt that you can never go wrong with improving your mindset towards life. Your mindset is solid right now and you don’t have a lot of worries, this is good but how can you make this mindset better?

Now, knowing that you want to build your personal brand, you’re going to have to become your own marketer. A marketing team finds the best qualities of a product they’re about to advertise and they work around those qualities to make the product stand out from other products.

So, let’s think a little here, what do you consider to be the best qualities about you and what do other people think you’re best qualities are. With these two groups of opinions, you can mix and match which qualities you think are the best because even if you think someone doesn’t truly know you, they’re able to give you an outside perspective of what you’re good at.

If they’re able to see valuable traits then it’s most likely that other people can see them and appreciate them as well. Learn to lock into that special trait and use it to your advantage.

Even though you’ve never really embraced that talent of yours, take it into consideration, there’s a difference between what we want to do and what we’re already good at doing.

Use what you’re good at to develop an opportunity to do what you want to do. Once your mind is set into place, you should now be taking a look at your appearance.

The people who you respect the most, how do they dress and how do they talk? They probably dress very nicely and very presentable, especially if they’re not a celebrity. Celebrities can get away with some crazy outfits because their brand has already built a fanbase. Now, you may need to put your pride aside and start dressing a bit more presentable.

Think about the people who you want to attract, how do they dress? They probably take pride in their presentation and health which is why you find them so attractive. Mirror this, and do this for yourself so that you can attract those people and most importantly feel good about yourself.

Why You Should Work On Your Personal Brand

Now that you understand more about the process, it’s good to remind yourself consistently of why you should be working on your personal brand. The world is filled with opportunities but we never really ask ourselves why we’re deserving of these things. We just think we should have it, just because.

This isn’t fair to the people who are working on retaining these opportunities daily. If it’s not clear now then you need to understand that you’re going to have to put in some work as well for the opportunities you want.

When you truly feel like you deserve these opportunities, then they will make themselves more presentable to you but you have to believe you really deserve them and you have to expect them to come. This is where your work starts to pay off, when you believe that you should have something, you’ll be putting in the work to get it.

This is simply part of self-improvement, if you weren’t open to it before then you may see why your brand is where it is. Taking care of yourself is important to your brand because others can see it. You gain more confidence in yourself when working towards your goals consistently and that will begin to show but you need to have a “why.”

Your “why” may be different from others and that’s okay, that’s what makes you motivated and that’s how you’ll change the world. Everyone’s purpose in life is not going to be the same, yes, there will be some similarities but we’re all different.

Your “why” may come from how you grew up or from where you’re at today because your not satisfied, you want more out of life and you can get it, you just have to work on yourself.

When your building your brand you need to realize that not everyone is going to like your brand. A brand like Amazon is liked by a lot of people but believe it or not there are some people in this world who truly hate it.

Find your target market and let the customers know how you can help them out. How can you add value to other people's lives? People may not take you seriously if you’re not dressed the part or if you can’t talk from the heart. People will admire your “why” if it’s something you truly desire because everyone has desires and some people can really relate to a story like yours.

Becoming Someone You’re Proud Of

As the owner of your brand, you have to be proud of what you’re selling. It has to show they care, love, and pay attention to detail when being used by others. Your personal brand should constantly be improving, it’s not that you’ll have the perfect or most successful brand but you should be growing in your eyes every day.

You won't be afraid to display your product once you’re truly proud of it, it’s a natural feeling that comes with time, work, and passion. This whole process will teach you how to be yourself and to love being yourself.

Yes, you can still be goofy, you can still like that food that one else likes, and you can still sing in the shower. Just understand how to use these habits as something that could help you promote yourself and relate to others because when someone can relate to you, they will be willing to invest in you.

Start building your personal brand today, you won’t regret it. Become the best version of yourself while you can and don’t be afraid to promote! I’ll leave you with a quote from Sir Richard Branson that says

“Branding demands commitment; commitment to continual re-invention; striking chords with people to stir their emotions; and commitment to imagination. It is easy to be cynical about such things, much harder to be successful.”

A young adult who’s writing is geared towards self-improvement and self care. “We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospect.”
