How to Use “Overthinking” to Your Advantage

It’s not that you overthink, you just think more than others…

How many times during the past year have you called yourself an overthinker?

Have you ever thought about what it actually means?

This is another word that has turned into a phrase that everyone uses when they think they’ve made the wrong decision. Some decisions that you make may not give you the outcome that you were looking for but they do leave you with a lesson. A lesson to learn from and to use in the near future when faced with a similar issue.

Being an overthinker is an ability that gets a bad rep. People who overthink have a superpower that they don’t even realize. It’s so powerful when used and interpreted in the correct way. You may be somebody who stresses themself out because you feel like you make too many wrong choices, which is understandable.

Nobody wants to make mistakes because of the consequences that come with them. When you make a decision that you’re not too comfortable with, the world finds a balance. When one mistake happens another solution is born.

If you bought a sweater from a store that you think was too expensive, that store made a profit. Even though you feel like you may have messed up after buying it, somebody else (in this case the store) made a sale.

When you start to look at the world as a place for everyone to grow and make progress, the whole concept of overthinking doesn’t seem that bad.

Have you ever witnessed somebody make a mistake or have some remorse right in front of you?

You probably feel bad for them at the moment but what comes to your head next is that the situation isn’t that horrific. You know that your friend or whoever will get over it and move on with their life.

Everyone is an overthinker, some people just take it more seriously than others.

Pushing Your Brain to Its Limits

Your brain is stronger than you think it is. It holds so much information for you daily that you would think it would get tired of learning. In actuality, your brain loves to learn, it wants to be pushed to its limits so that it could grow.

As an overthinker, you might feel overwhelmed and even a little frustrated at first. This is some of the pain that comes with thinking more than other people. Yes, you think more than other people, when other people are logged off from reality, your mind is still going. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, you're simply unique. Your brain is constantly coming up with ways to think of different scenarios and situations.

Many people don’t like to be considered an overthinker because they think that it has to do with stress. Well everyone is stressed, but as an overthinker, you worry less because you know what you’re stressed about. You know what’s going in your head, you just have a hard time trying to figure out how to make it feel better.

People who claim to not be overthinkers usually have trouble figuring out what’s wrong with them, they’re too unmotivated to see what’s wrong with them. You need to reframe how you’re perceiving yourself as somebody who thinks too much.

You’re a superhero to your own self, you’re able to identify different problems before they take over your whole mood.

Something else to keep in mind is that your brain needs exercise. The more you try to not think about it, the more you start to focus on it. This is because your brain is attracted to problems, whether they’re good or bad.

Dealing with regret is a process that everyone needs to experience. Regret will make you do research on yourself, things like why you did something, or what gave you the idea to take that risk in the first place. Overthinkers have the power to analyze themselves and become one with who they truly are.

You Really Do Care About Yourself

So, why do you overthink?

Instead of saying that you can’t help it, acknowledge yourself for doing it. When you make a mistake that you regret, you are worried about your best interest. You care about yourself in the past and in the future. Being able to overthink a situation that has just happened to you, shows how much you mean to yourself.

This is how relationships with the self are made by experiences like these. As an overthinker, you know that you can or could've done better in a situation. There’s not a lot of people that can say this you know, people are always getting mad at external events instead of thinking about what they could’ve done in a situation.

Having this relationship with yourself as an overthinker is important and makes you stand out. Be thankful that you have this trait instilled in you.

Now, too much of anything is bad but that comes in question when it comes to thinking. Everyone spends their life thinking, it’s too hard not too. There are some scenarios where overthinking can really hurt you but knowing when it’s doing that damage is another key trait to have.

If you feel like overthinking is ruining you then you may want to try out some practices like meditation to slow down your mind. Or you can always look at it as something different that many people don’t have and use it as a superior skill.

Learning more about yourself every time you overthink is just one of the benefits that come with the habit. As an over-thinker you are forced to look out for yourself, any bad decision that you make can either hurt you or benefit you depending on how you look at it. So, when you feel like you’re not getting enough love from anybody else, you’ll always have yourself to lean on.

Always Having Options

Being an overthinker usually means that you can’t make a choice about something or that you’ve made the wrong choice about something. You have the option to think about what you need to do versus what you want to do.

These options aren’t always easy to think about but do give you some clarity when facing a tough situation. Many times, we feel like there is only one way to think and that we’re always right about that way. This is not the case because when overthinking you know that there is more than one way to think about something.

If you end up doing one thing then it could lead you to faster results but more stress in the long run or if you do something else it could cause you a lot of stress upfront and less stress in the future.

Having options is a pretty foreign mindset for everyone to have. Being able to choose how you want to think takes some getting used to but many overthinkers are actually used to. The reason for this is because people who overthink are never stuck in one mindset, their mind is always jumping to different topics and is always asking the question “what if.”

You also have different outcomes when thinking too much. Even though you don’t know if something is right, you know that there is always another outcome that can happen. This can be a little scary for overthinkers but also shows how much creativity they have as well.

Being an overthinker isn’t as bad you think it is. You have many mental options that many people aren’t able to tap into. I’ll leave you with a quote from Napoleon Bonaparte that says

“Take time to deliberate, but when the time for action has arrived, stop thinking and go in.”
