If you’ve taken on a new side hustle as of recently, then you know how time-consuming it can be. It’s pretty hard to balance your side hustles with your regular job and personal life as well. It’s not an easy situation to think about but we knew that getting into this new hobby would require some time and effort.
Now that we know we can’t complain too much about our situation, we need to learn about how much our side hustles really mean to us and how much time we should be spending on them.
There’s no perfect formula for everyone to follow in this scenario because all of our side hustles are different and we all live totally different lives. Your life is built upon responsibilities that you decided to take on overtime and it’s hard to abandon those responsibilities when you know you need them to survive and grow.
Working a regular job or going to school is completely fine and helps to take care of some of our goals but in reality, these are not our goals, they are basic requirements that we need to stay alive.
Once we’re able to handle these responsibilities with the job we have now, we realize we need to do something we’re passionate about in order to be happy and to one day make a living off of what we’re passionate about. Many would consider this to be the real American dream but many would also disagree.
There are people who are okay with their job now and have been blessed enough to get a job that they really like but not everyone gets this lucky. Some of us even go to the extent of saying that “we hate our job.”
So, this is where our side hustles come in, we’re planting a seed now so that we can have a big and fruit-filled tree later in life. When deciding how much time you want to spend on your passion project it all comes down to how much you want it to grow.
Know Your Daily Schedule
It’s good to know how your day is going to go when first waking up. Of course, life will hit you with a curveball, and your day may not go as planned but you should at least have a general idea of what the day will look like.
Figure out the time of the day where you’re free, this may be when you have a lunch break from work or when you get off from work. Don’t worry too much about the things you do in between where you’re taking care of your responsibilities.
The more you start to observe certain areas of your life daily, you will see that you have more time on your hand than you thought.
This was the case for me starting from last year. I’ve always had free time in the morning since deciding to take night classes for university. Before I decided to start blogging, I spent my mornings eating an unnecessary big breakfast, followed up by a long nap and then a few episodes of Narcos on Netflix. This was all within the span of three to four hours.
If you have a period of time like this during the day or even night, you need to take advantage of that time and spend that time working on your side hustles. There’s a reason why it’s called a “side” hustle, this is because it’s not your “main” hustle yet.
Your main hustle is the job you have now where you do it because you need to take care of your responsibilities. Have some patience with yourself when trying to develop a new schedule for your side business.
This is a big change that you’re going to be adding into your life and it may not be as comfortable as sitting in your bed for two hours watching YouTube videos and scrolling through social media.
This is a commitment you’ve made to yourself and you have stuck with so that you can benefit from it in the future. Also, you never know when the opportunity is going to come for your side hustle to take off so you have to be ready with a hard-working mindset.
Use Your Energy Efficiently
It’s crucial that you’re putting good energy into your side hustles, it’s not the easiest thing to do after having a long day of work but it is possible. Only you know how you’re energy is when having the ability to use it.
If you’re in a negative mood and you’re tired as well then you may not want to spend too much time on your side hustle. There should be something that you’re doing every day to contribute to your hustle but if you’re not putting good energy into it then it is less likely to succeed.
Just like with anything else you do in life. If you go into work with negative energy then you’re more likely to have a bad day. Keep your energy positive and upbeat by listening to music, reminding yourself of why your side hustle makes you happy, and the end goal you have with it.
These are reminders I tell myself daily when I’m feeling off or unmotivated because there will be times where life will just not go your way. This is okay because this is making your situation difficult at the moment but it’s helping you to get ready for future obstacles when it comes to your passion project.
Monitor your energy and if you have the time, put work into your business when you feel your best. There will be days where you may feel really positive and excited to work on your side hustle just because an idea you’ve had about it all night or good karma had decided to come your way.
There will also be days where you may not feel 100 % and on these days you should work on building up positive energy.
In an interview with rapper Big Sean, he talks about what “working smart” means to him. In the interview, he went along to say that there may be days where he may feel like working all day and night on music but there are also days where he may want to chill out and go see movies or have fun with friends. The time where he took days off of music has helped him in the next time he was in the studio. He says “There were days where I would do 16 hours of work within the span of 30 minutes,” and this was because he took time for himself the day before.
Think About How Much You Want to Grow
If you have a side hustle you’ve been working for a long time now or you’re relatively new to the game then you know essential sacrifices are. You will have to sacrifice some of your personal time to make your dreams a reality.
You should always make time for yourself but just know that the opportunity to work on your side hustle may dive into that time. Start understanding what you may have to sacrifice in your life and accept it, what you should always keep in mind is to not let your side hustle take over your life.
Don’t let it destroy you, at the end of the day no matter how successful your project may be, it could be taken away within seconds so appreciate your life outside of the project as well.
Think about how much you want it to grow in the future, this will make you find time every day to work on your project. Even if you don’t have a lot of time, try to contribute someday, somehow, even if it was smaller than the day before. I'm going to remind you of this again, if you’re truly passionate about what you’re doing then you'll make time for that hustle.
Fall in love with the process of growth, this will be helpful to your business journey. The amount of energy you put into your passion project is the amount of energy you’ll get out of it. I’ll leave you with a quote from Anais Nin that says
“Good things happen to those who hustle.”
