How Skincare Teaches You Lessons About Self-Love
Skincare isn’t just for looking good it’s for making you feel good as well
Taking care of your skin is important, to say the least. Your face is your brand, it’s what people look at every day. Truth be told, when you’re meeting someone new for the first time, they judge you off of your appearance. It’s not until a little later on they start to see you more for your face. People memorize you from your face, when they think of your name, they think about your face.
Now, only if it were this easy to have perfect skin right? Well, although there are some people who have good genes, they still have the task of taking care of their skin. The journey for skincare is different for everyone, and it can be harder to navigate for some.
There are many different treatments and routines that you can try but it’s always good to know the basics of how to take care of your face. Once you figure out how to keep this routine simple and implement it into your life daily, then your outer world will become simpler as well.
There are three steps recommended by Pharell Williams to taking care of your skin. Pharell Williams is an American music producer and singer who is 47 years old but looks like he is still in his early 20’s. He admits that having good genetics does play a part in him looking younger than most people his age but he does recommend that everyone should start taking care of their skin as early as possible.
He started really getting into skincare about 20 plus years ago and hasn’t stopped since then. He has finally given away his secret to great skin after so many years and he has also released a new skincare line under his brand Human Race. The product explains his technique in three steps which include: cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturizing.
After hosting an Instagram Live meeting with his long time friend and dermatologist Dr. Elena Jones, they explained how skincare isn’t just for beauty but for life as well. Let’s take a deep dive into each of the steps and how they can impact your life in a positive way.
Cleansing your mind
The first step in taking care of your facial skin is using a cleanser. This is basically a simple face wash that you use to get rid of any bacteria that you may have picked up from the day or to get rid of any acne that may be on your face.
This process can be done during the morning and night and is easy to do. All you do is wet your face and mix the face wash with some water in your hands and gently rub through your face. After a few seconds of doing that, you wash off the cleanser and dry your face with a cloth.
Every day in our life we deal with negative people and external forces that are out of our control. Those thoughts tend to stick with us all the way until we go to bed. It’s important that we find a way to cleanse our minds daily with either journaling, meditation, or something like exercise. These are just a few things that you can do to cleanse your mind day by day.
My personal favorite out of these three is journaling because I’m able to get rid of all of these negative emotions by writing them out. Once I see those problems in writing, they’re not as stressful as I first thought them to be.
Just like how there are different kinds of cleansers that you use there are different ways of cleansing your mind as I mentioned above. This first step is a great start to better skin and to having a better mindset on life. When applying a cleanser both for your physical health and mental health it shouldn’t be difficult to do.
There will be times where you’ll have an acne scar that won’t go away or painful memory that keeps you up at night but as you keep cleansing daily, these two things will eventually go away. Remember, this is something that should be done daily and when building this technique into a habit, you’ll have an easier time maintaining a good mindset and a cleaner looking face.
Exfoliate/smooth down your life
When being asked in more than a handful of interviews about his skin, Pharrell always told the interviewers that “When you exfoliate and drink a lot of water, it does good for you.” He’s also told reporters that the secret to his youthful look is by exfoliating like a “madman!”
Not everyone has skin like Pharrell that can handle exfoliation on a daily basis, but nonetheless, you should still implement exfoliation into your skincare routine weekly. The process of exfoliating is the same as using a face wash and can be done within under a minute.
What an exfoliator does is it removes all of the dead layers of skin and makes room for cell turnover, which is your new skin. This allows your skin to become smoother over time and gives it a natural glow.
Just like a physical exfoliator, we have to do our best of getting rid of bad habits that may make us feel dead inside.
How do we do this?
By trying new things, getting out of our comfort zone every time we get the chance to. The secret to having a smoother life is by making room in our lives to recreate ourselves and to become a better version of ourselves. This technique is powerful for life and for your skin as well. Just like for your skin to become more youthful it’s going to take some time and work.
These are two things that you’re going to have to become comfortable with if you want things to eventually go your way. Let this exfoliation process be a time to organize your life and to remind yourself to stay young at times. Live a little bit and life will go more smoothly for you.
Lock in everything that’s helping you cope
The last step to a good skincare routine that any dermatologist will tell you is to moisturize. Moisturizing is a way to prevent your skin from being dry and to lock in all of your work from cleansing and exfoliating. If you’re putting in the work for your side business or on your spirituality, don’t you want it to stick with you for the rest of your life?
An equivalent to moisturizing when it comes to life outside of your face is by keeping yourself grounded. Count your blessings and always remind yourself of what is going right in your life. Sometimes you may be feeling like you’re living a dried out lifestyle or your skin may feel dry as well, make sure you moisturize by being thankful and using a cream to help your skin feel and look healthy.
A moisturizer for your skin should be used throughout the morning and night and also throughout the day. Don’t forget to live your life in simple terms, don’t make things too complicated. Stick to an easy process like how your skincare should be. Keep doing what’s working, it’s working for a reason.
Your face is an expression of how you’re feeling internally so take care of your outside appearance as much as you’re taking care of it internally. Find a skincare routine that works for you and apply it to your life. I'll leave you with a quote from Pharrell Williams that says
“Take care of yourself so that you can take care of others.”
