We take energy for granted at times due to the fact that we always have it. There’s the energy that you give off into the world and then there's the energy you have within yourself to use for work and other activities you do.
Have you ever thought about how much energy you put into something when you were happy? Usually, when we have a genuine laugh at something we’re watching or with someone we’re talking to, we’re focused on that thing or person very intensely.
We may not realize how focused we are but that subject has our attention for the time being. In order to have a real laugh and a real smile on your face, you have to pay attention. If you don’t pay attention then you might miss a few words that make the joke fun funny.
You probably get sick of being tired daily, no one likes to be tired when starting their first task for the day or when going to work. It almost feels like you have no energy.
Of course, you do have some energy when starting your day but your battery may not be fully recharged from the night before. So, how do you use that half-full battery to your advantage when starting your day?
You simply have to see what you’re putting your energy into and why. You should always strive to wake up with a full battery but we’re all humans and we tend to stay up late at night scrolling through social media or working on our side hustles a little too late.
It happens, there will be days where you may not be full of energy so when looking at what you have to do during the day, see where most of your energy should go. You decide this by finding good reasons as to why your energy should go there.
Make Sure You Have Enough Energy
If you want to have enough as much energy as possible, you need to look at a few areas in your life. These areas include sleep, diet, and some type of exercise. These are the areas that contribute to your overall energy and will help you have a longer-lasting battery throughout your day.
Let’s dive into sleep first, many of us function off of different hours of sleep but the time frame that is recommended the most for all human beings is seven to nine hours of sleep. If you’re not getting this much sleep a night then you may want to start going to be a little earlier.
If this isn’t the easiest thing for you to do then you can look into implementing a nightly ritual that will help you to go to sleep earlier. This nighttime routine can include having a cup of tea before going to bed, reading a fictional book, or even using a meditation app like Headspace to help you fall asleep with a guided mediation.
My favorite out of these three would be to read a few pages of a light book before I go to sleep. This seems to be most effective when I have the lights dimmed in my room and when I’m reading in my bed. I know to stop reading when I feel my head start to fall and my eyes begin to close repeatedly.
Eating certain foods throughout the day can help you to have the energy for different phases of your daily cycle. Eating fruits that contain citrus in them has helped many people to be more alert in the morning and prevent them from hopping back into bed after breakfast.
Eating vegetables with every meal can also give you a boost of energy that seems to help you push through that tired state after you’re done eating as well. Watch what you’re eating and make sure that you’re not continually eating foods you know make you tired like pastries and heavy meats.
Lastly, make sure that you get some exercise in your system at least once a day or even a few times a week. If you’re someone who doesn’t like to do very intense workouts then you can look into low-intensity workouts like walking.
Pay Attention to Your Feelings
When taking on certain tasks throughout the day, it’s important to pay attention to how you are feeling. If you can’t understand what about that tasks will benefit you in the future then you may want to come back to that task when you actually have enough energy to do it.
When you start to become more familiar with your energy, you start to realize the options of what you can work on next. Pay attention to what you feel like doing that’s productive when you do have that energy. Even when we have a lot of energy like this we tend to think about unproductive things we can do with that energy like watch videos online or watch t.v. for a few hours.
This is not a very wise way of using your energy, as a matter of fact, you’re wasting your energy. The more energy we waste on unproductive activities, the more we will regret not having that energy left for when we have to do something that’s actually challenging.
You should actually be working on the most challenging tasks in your life when you’re full of energy. This increases your chances of getting your tasks done a lot faster than usual and it won’t be as painful to do because you have so much energy to use.
Now, once you’re done with that overbearing tasks, that’s when you can reward yourself by using some of that tired energy to watch t.v. or scroll through your phone.
If you’re lucky or if you’re using your energy in the correct way, you may still have a lot of energy left over from doing that big task to where you can work on something else productive.
This is where you start to get a lot of work done, this is the untapped energy you know you’re capable of having but don’t get to use regularly. Also, put your energy into things that make you happy.
So, if you have a lot of energy and there’s a book you’ve been wanting to read but your life is so busy, take time to read that book. Who knows, with that amount of energy you might finish the book in one sitting.
This is why using your energy wisely is so important. You can’t get a lot more done in a day when using your energy in the right places at the right time.
Push Yourself When Necessary
There’s no doubt about it when it comes to being tired throughout the day. Yes, there will be times where you wake up with a full battery and you still are tired, it just happens.
Something could’ve gone wrong with your diet for the day or maybe you got up too many times throughout the night to use the bathroom but that’s life as a human being.
You should keep in the back of your mind that you need to be able to push yourself during times where you are tied. You may start working on a task with full energy but during the task, your energy may start to become questionable.
You may start to feel a little sleepy but in order to get things done on a daily basis, you’re going to have to push yourself. These methods are to help you have fewer days like this but just know that you will get tired sometimes.
Always know how you are feeling, know the type of person you are, and don’t try to compare your energy to others. The best feeling is to have energy left over at the end of your day. You don’t want to feel burned out every day before you go to bed because you’ll get tired of the process and not look forward to the next day.
Using your energy with the right intention is crucial for a happy and successful life. Be patient with yourself and pay attention to your feelings daily. I’ll leave you with a quote from Bill Bryson that says
