Thinking Too Much Into the Future Is a Trap
Thinking too much into the future can lead you down a very depressing path, thinking like this can bring stress and anxiety into your life. It’s not easy to think about your exact preferred future but you have an idea of what it is.
For some, it may be a modern home and fridge filled with all sorts of food. For others, it may be having a family with a specific kind of partner and a certain amount of kids.
What these dreams do to us is they make us frustrated about where we are now. Even though our life isn’t that bad as of right now, it still makes us upset that we can’t make those dreams into a reality with the snap of our fingers.
Social media makes this even worse for us as we see people our age or younger with some of the things we so much desire. It’s a cold world we live in and some people are able to receive these blessings at an earlier time than you.
It’s just the way life works and you can choose to either stress about what you don’t have or be happy about what you do have. Everyone has dreams and we’re supposed to, other than survival, why else do we go to work or school?
We have the mindset of doing these things to help us get closer to that future. Even when that future seems too far away, there’s a part of us that thinks it’s possible to attain it.
This feeling is in the front of our minds when we are younger. When you first learn about people living a certain lifestyle and when you first hear about someone making a certain income, you say to yourself “That’s what I want to do.”
Over time as we get older, we get more realistic about our circumstances and we start to degrade the thought of ever reaching those goals. Sometimes we need to remind ourselves of what it’s like to have that childlike mindset and be motivated to accomplish those goals.
For now, while you’re still working on your path to success, it’s good that you don’t think too much about the future because it can distract you from all the good things that are happening in your life right now.
Focus On Your Daily Goals
Making a list the night before or in the morning of what you want to accomplish on that day is an easy way to focus your thoughts on what’s going on around you.
This list should be filled with tasks you know you’re capable of accomplishing and even a few that make you a little uncomfortable. The tasks that you know you can do are things that are normally part of your daily routine like exercise, eating healthy, and rest.
You may get to do these things every day but you know you’re capable of doing it, they’re healthy habits that are going to allow you to grow. Next, you may have your responsibilities on that list like work, errands, and chores.
These are things that bring structure to your life and you most likely have to do them in order to live organized and remain at a leveled head.
Lastly, on that list, you should try putting a few things on there that make you uncomfortable like networking with people who you think can help you, working on your social skills outside of your phone, and even trying a new recipe that you’ve never cooked before. These things help you to grow as well and make you feel accomplished at the end of your day.
Once your goals are written down, you should be reminding yourself of them as the day goes on. So, taking a look at the list when you can or telling yourself of these tasks in your head every few hours will work as well.
When you’re thinking about all you get to do during the day you’re not too focused on what your future will look like. You’ll start being more worried about how you feel towards the end of the day and there’s no better feeling than going to sleep knowing you tackled your goals for the day.
Appreciate What’s In Front Of You
You have a lot of blessings in your life that you may not be too aware of right now. Everyone is different but you know what you have and what you should be thankful for.
Look at what you’ve been able to purchase over the years with the money you earned or even some of the things that were gifted to you. Be proud of what you have and be thankful to have it because there is someone else in this world who would be dying to have those things.
You should look at these objects as reminders of the good times in your life. Do you remember how happy you were when you found out about Medium? There’s so much to be happy about and our thoughts can get the best of us sometimes but be happy with what you have.
Even if you’ve had these products for years be grateful they still operate and still work. Look back on your accomplishments. You’ve done great things in your life, some have impressed others and some have impressed yourself.
What are you proud of in your life? You may even have some trophies to show those accomplishments so take a look at them and bring yourself back to that time when you won the award and how you felt.
Now, keep that same feeling you had and bring it back into your life now. The level of gratitude may not be exactly the same as it was in the past but you will walk around happier and as a winner.
It’s your time now to work on that next trophy whether it’s getting in shape, working on a passion project, or becoming a more positive person. Don’t forget about the people who are in your life now.
The friends and family you do have and who you’re able to talk to. You may lose contact with some family members but you’ll have a few that stay around. Even if you don’t talk to them as much as you should or vice versa, just appreciate their presence while you can.
Take Action On Your Desired Future
If you can’t stop thinking about your future then it’s a sign for you to start taking action. If you truly believe that your future can happen the way you want it to then you will start putting in the work from now.
First things first, you need to know what you actually want from your future. This will give you a more clear goal to achieve and when the goal is clear to you in your mind then you will have a more clear path to that future.
If you’ve never really thought about what kind of future you want then you may want to meditate on it for a few days. Once you know what you want, you can then make a plan of you to get where you want.
This plan can include short-term and long-term goals that you can work on them in order to reach that ultimate goal. Be aware that the journey to this future may be a lot longer than you expect, it may take years but if you have a plan then there’s no need to worry because whenever you feel like you don’t know what to do you can always go back to that plan.
Finally, make this plan part of your everyday life because that’s what it’s going to take in order to get to that future.
Don’t fall into the trap of thinking about your future too much, it’s out of your control so do what you can to make it happen but be content with the outcome life gives you. Put the work in and you will figure out that life has something even greater for you than you could’ve ever imagined. I’ll leave you with a quote from C.S. Lewis that says
