What to Do When You Forget Your Affirmations

What are you telling yourself and how often are you telling yourself this?

Being nervous makes you extremely uncomfortable, it makes you want to move around and it’s almost like you’re not in control of your thoughts or your actions. Affirmations can be used for situations like this and can help people change their perspective on life within a matter of seconds.

Do you have any affirmations that you tell yourself daily? Even if you think you don’t, you probably do. Whether the affirmation is positive or negative, you have a thought in your head that repeats itself every day and around the same time.

The thought that I have in my head almost every day that seems to pop up whenever I’m feeling nervous or sad is “the energy you put out, is the energy that you will receive.” This tends to pop up in my head when I’m at work and I start to get hungry or even when I’m at home doing tons of homework.

You should strive to have positive affirmations like this tucked away in your brain so that you can use them for desperate times. A phenomenon that happens to everybody at least once in their lives is a moment in time where you feel like you may really need that positive affirmation but you forget it.

Sometimes, the situation that you’re in can be so intense that you're not able to remember the affirmation that you tell yourself. You know you should be thinking it but the thought cannot complete itself.

For example, let’s say your go-to affirmation is “there will be better days.” This is a nice and simple affirmation that is easy to remember and can be very effective to anyone.

There was a time and a place where you may have been so anxious that, that thought isn't able to complete itself. You may say the first couple of words like “there will…,” but then there's just silence.

This is completely normal and it happens to everyone, people forget their affirmations from time to time and it sucks. There are some things you can put into practice that will help you to improve your memory of an affirmation and will keep you mentally strong when having to use that affirmation.

Have At Least One Memorized

Even if you already have a go-to affirmation, you should have one that is memorized for really tough moments that are going to happen in your life. This is planning for the worst-case scenario, you want to be prepared for situations like this because you already know what it feels like to not be.

Choose a simple affirmation that you think is unique and helpful to your life. If you’re lucky enough, you may have one that you remember from when you were a child. These affirmations from your past can help you tremendously as you get older.

They may not have meant much to you when you were smaller but you can look at these thoughts from a more mature mindset. It may feel a little funny at first because you may feel like you’re being childish but you’re not. You’re just planning for any future nerve-racking events, if anything, you’re more ahead of the game than a lot of people.

When you have at least one affirmation memorized, you’re able to be calmer in situations and you will also have an easier time taking control of the situation.

People will look at you kind of weird at first for not overreacting but eventually, they will begin to respect you. If you’ve never had an affirmation that you can rely on, start practicing one now, it’s not too late.

With the right amount of practice and repetition, you can have this affirmation down to memory within a few months or a year. You can also learn affirmations from people who you look up to like celebrities or authors.

It will be easier for you to remember these because you can envision them saying it instead of you. So, whenever you’re feeling anxious, just think of your favorite person saying that same affirmation and it will start to become part of your vocabulary.

Have One Written Down

Have an affirmation saved as your screensaver on your phone, that way, whenever you open your phone you can see that affirmation and be reminded of the positive energy it brings you. You may want to change the affirmation or picture every few months because you will get tired of it and you will start to ignore it after a certain while.

This is a useful technique because we are always on our phones and we spend a lot of our lives on our phones. Why not be reminded of an affirmation when being on a device that controls a lot of our lives.

Next, if the phone method isn't working for you then you can have an affirmation written down on a piece of paper and carry it with you. There many pros to using this technique and a few cons as well.

Whenever you have something you can read from that isn't your phone, the words on that paper become more valuable. There’s something about feeling the texture of a piece of paper and seeing your handwriting. Pull this piece of paper out whenever you feel you need to.

Times like this may be after an argument, when having a panic attack, or even when you may be feeling tired. You can say to yourself “Wow! I can’t believe I wrote this and you will be amazed by what you believe in and have more trust in that affirmation because you put effort into writing that sentence.

Some people even take this process a step further and get an affirmation tattooed on their bodies. People do this so that the affirmation can stay with them forever and so they can have easy access to it as well.

You will see affirmations mostly on people’s arms because it’s just an easy place for them to look at. If you don’t want to get a tattoo then you can have an affirmation written on a wristband or a necklace. When doing any of these techniques, you will be able to feel the energy coming from that affirmation entering your body with good intentions.

Meditation and prayer are two techniques that you can go to when in a nervous situation. When it comes to mediation, you may not have time to sit down and keep your back straight for ten minutes or more.

Instead, you can keep it simple and focus on your breathing for a few seconds. All you have to do is breathe in and breathe out. Do that until you can consciously feel your breath and you can even count to ten. This will automatically help your mind and body to relax without even knowing.

Now, when you want to pray, you may want to go somewhere quiet if you can and quickly ask God for whatever emotion or help you need in a situation.

Just saying a payer can give you hope for a situation and make you more confident in your decision-making. Both techniques are useful and can be done very quickly. There are the two techniques I use almost every day of my life and they have helped me to get through the day without too much stress.

The affirmations that you tell yourself are very important and will display your overall aura towards life. People can feel the energy you give off, this is why you need affirmations to help you have good energy around you. I’ll leave you with a quote from Roy T. Bennett that says

“Attitude is a choice. Happiness is a choice. Optimism is a choice. Kindness is a choice. Giving is a choice. Respect is a choice. Whatever choice you make makes you. Choose wisely.”

A young adult who’s writing is geared towards self-improvement and self care. “We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospect.”
