Why You Should Be Looking Forward to Life’s Obstacles

When things are getting terrible it usually means something good is around the corner

Life gets easier and harder every day but it’s something everyone has to deal with. When we wake up in the morning, we should always expect the worse because nothing is guaranteed. Of course, we should go about our day with positivity but life has a funny way of surprising us. This surprise usually comes in the form of what many people like to describe as an “obstacle.”

Obstacles at the playground were fun when we were kids but how about the obstacles that life has to offer? If anything, these obstacles are far from fun and they don’t know when to stop. Obstacle after obstacle is bound to happen and you have to be ready for it.

Life’s toughest battles seem to make their way into our lives unannounced and when we least expect it. Is there anything we can do to prepare for days like this? We can do many things and use a variety of different techniques but our best option as human beings with feelings and knowledge is to just take it head-on.

We can also become comfortable with obstacles when they arrive. No matter your age, you’ve dealt with obstacles and you’re probably dealing with one right now.

Isn't it crazy to think after all of the stuff we've been through that we’re still not used to these battles? It’s actually scary when you think about it but there’s nothing to be scared of. Especially when you know that life is going to do the least expected, so if we let go and take on whatever life decides to throw at us then we will be more comfortable in those moments of stress.

It all comes down to how you deal with these problems and how you respond to them. Let’s look at why you should be looking forward to life’s obstacles.

You’re Getting Smarter

How many times have you heard that you should be learning from your mistakes? One of the biggest cliches in the world but like most cliches, they’re true! How do you actually learn from your mistakes?

Well, it comes down to how that mistake affected you. If the mistake you made only made a small alter to your life then you may not take it seriously. This is opposed to a mistake where your life was hugely impacted. Mistakes like this stay with you and make you think about them years later.

I like to think of these mistakes as the “cringe moments” of my life. When having many of these types of mistakes in your life, you need to become aware of the impact they have on you. Not only at the time they happened but even to how they affect you now.

These mistakes are irreversible and the more you know that then the smarter you will become. If you want to gain wisdom in your life then you need to comfortable with making mistakes.

You don’t want it to become a habit where it’s causing you to fail in life but you should be doing it enough times to where you’re able to learn more about yourself and the world faster than others. Do things that make you uncomfortable and that you know you’ll probably mess upon.

It’s hard to do at first, but once you do these uncomfortable things over and over again, it starts to get easier. Now, don’t forget about the little mistakes you’re making. These small mistakes are usually what hurt us the most after a long period of time because we keep making the same ones.

Small instances like this gain compound interest over time and become a bad habit that is usually too hard for us to fix. Start taking your small mistakes seriously and analyze them more than you usually would.

You’re Getting Stronger

Your biggest and most important muscle is your brain, constantly work on it if you want to become mentally strong. How does our brain get stronger over time? It’s simple, it gets stronger by going through obstacles consistently. Life is going to test you time and time again, and if you’re anything like me then you may not be the best test taker whether it’s in academics or not.

In order to pass these tests or get through them, you have to be confident in your ability to take on these tests. Just like if you were in school, you have to study if you want to do good on a test. Start studying what's going on around you, the more observant you start to become of your life the more ready you will be for these obstacles.

Reward yourself when the test is over, even if you didn’t pass the first time, you can give yourself an opportunity to try again or to learn from it. It may not be obvious here but you’re strengthening your brain for the next test that’s coming.

The more you study, the more knowledge you will have when an obstacle comes in your way.

What about those tests where some of the questions catch you by surprise or you have no idea of what the questions are asking for? Well, you really have only one option in this scenario and that is to do your best. Look, life isn't fair and some of the obstacles you get if not most will be so hard to overcome but you need to believe in yourself and use your prior knowledge to pass these tests.

Also, you won’t pass every test that comes your way, no one does. It’s not until we completely fail those tests or come close to passing where we learn the most. Start looking forward to life’s obstacles, they have knowledge contained inside of them that you need to unlock. If you want to be more knowledgeable about life in general do your research and fail harder.

Don’t be afraid to fail, you’re taking a leap of faith at the end of the day but you’re putting yourself in a position to learn and many people are too scared to be in this position, so be different and be brave.

Your Life is Balancing Itself Out

There have to be good and bad times in your life, it's what makes everything balanced. If our life was good 24/7, 365 days a year, then there would be nothing to overcome, life would get boring.

We shouldn’t strive to have a perfect life, we should be embracing the obstacles that are to come. Even when it comes to money, no matter the amount of money we see in our bank account, we have to keep in mind the problems that come with it. This is known as “rich people problems” or “more money, more problems.”

Having balance in your life makes everything worth it, those bad days where you’re dealing with rude customers or even rude coworkers have some meaning toward your life in the future. You may not be able to see it now but it will have its definition.

The world seems to never be at a balance but in a way it is, when something isn’t going right for one person, it’s usually going good for another. Be patient with the obstacles that life has to offer and don’t be afraid of them.

Be brave and love the struggles that are coming your way because they’re helping you become the best version of yourself. Suffer now and enjoy life later, don’t let obstacles tear you down, let them build you up. I’ll leave you with a quote from Molière that says

“The greater the obstacle, the more glory in overcoming it.”

A young adult who’s writing is geared towards self-improvement and self care. “We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospect.”
